Project Description

Saint Stephens

ABOUT PROJECT

Located in one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Austin, TX, this 5,000 SF home had a fantastic floor plan to work with however it was much too traditional and compartmentalized for the client’s taste.  Velvet Hammerschmidt’s primary focus was to transform the dining, kitchen, living, and family rooms into a family-friendly open and cohesive space.

In the living room she added a 7th full-height window, transformed the exterior fireplace into a two-sided focal piece, and removed the faux wood beams and canted ceiling in order to connect the space with the adjacent kitchen and dining areas.  One of the most intriguing design gems of the house is the 100% custom wine room and cantilevered bar that Velvet designed. The homeowner’s breath-taking wine collection seemingly floats on unsupported and individually lit shelves, which span more than six feet across.  The grain of the Walnut veneer panels were impeccably matched from one to the next and even light fixtures aligned with the seams of the structure. No detail was left unaddressed in this striking design. The coved blue light frames the space and adds a unique character to the room.

The existing kitchen was completely demolished as was the full height buffet, (formerly where the current dining table is pictured). The new top-of-the-line Bulthaup kitchen is a masterpiece and speaks for itself. Note how the paneled refrigerator and freezer disappear in the stunning “wall” of Walnut veneer, the full-height glass backsplash behind the cook top, the top-of-the-line triangular venting hood, the sleek ¼” solid surface sink counter top, the stainless steel counter defining the cooking area… it’s all sleek as can be!

To embellish the space with anything other than the highest quality of furniture would have been a disservice. Thus, Velvet selected from the following brands: Minotti, Cassina, Steinway, A. Rudin and, Leucos lighting.
